While teaching a two week sexuality unit in health class at a local high school, I attended an anti-bullying assembly put on by Michael Chase from The Kindness Center. The impact on all who attended ... teens and adults ... was astounding! the day following the assembly was declared "Kindness Day" and the energy in the school was electric!
As a result, I was asked to help the school form "The Kindness Crew". The Crew agreed to colloborate with a local agency and declare 2011 A Year of Kindness. Weekly suggested actions will be promoted on the school's TV Morning News Show and published on the Teen Clinic at White Mountain Community Healh's Facebook page.
I love the way teens approach life ... totally in the moment and geared up for action! In my adult brain, I was thinking of who I needed to email to make this happen and was shooting for implementation first thing Monday morning.
As I was leaving the building, literally 15 minutes after our meeting, I heard the secretary from the main office announcing the Positive Action for This Week, brought to you by the Kindness Crew! The kids certainly didn't waste any time waiting for me :)
I hope you will join us in our year of positive action. This will get you started:
A Year of Positive Action: Week One
Send a thank-you card or letter to someone who has had a positive influence on you. Let them know how much their words and actions have meant in your life.*
So after writing my letter to one of my mentors, I'm off to teach a class on the teen brain development, living in the moment and sexual responsibility.
