We are creating all the time. Our thoughts create our feelings. Our feelings create our actions. Our actions create our reality. We do this both consciously and subconsciously.
According to Mindy Audlin, author of "What If It All Goes Right", there are two words that hold within them the power to create and the power to destroy. They are "What If?" A "what if downer" answers the "what if" question with things like: What if it doesn’t work? What if it’s too expensive? What if I fail? What if the timing is wrong? What if I make a mistake? A "what if upper" answers the "what if" question with things like: What if it does work? What if the resources I need are right at my fingertips? What if it’s easy? What if it’s fun? What if it transforms my life in ways I can’t even imagine? The Universe will respond to both "what if downers" and "what if uppers" and help each create the reality that their thoughts are fueling. I am consciously choosing to be a 'what if upper"! Chieck out http://www.whatifup.com/ to find more information. Even though it doesn't always seem like your teens notice or care if you're around ... it matters to them that you're there. They may say you embarass or annoy them. They may even ignore you when you attend their sporting events and performances or they may not even acknowledge that you are there when they come home. Truth is, deep down they notice, they care and it matters! Meet them where they are. on their terms and show interest in whatever they are doing while at the same time giving them space and distance to connect with their friends and own their own activities. And you might just need to develop a thick skin and remember not to take their need for independence personally. As for rainbows ... more often than not, you are their rainbow and they are yours. rainbow time! And rainbow time is important! This weeks Positive Action suggestion was to send a thank-you card or letter to someone who has had a positive influence on you and let them know how much their words and actions have meant in your life.
I've been thinking about this for the past few days and trying to decide who I would write to. I woke up this morning with the letter already written by my subconscious mind as I slept. In just a few minutes after awakening, the letter was emailed to my ex-husband. The influence he has had on my life has been profound and my experience with him has literally changed my life, ultimately connecting me to where I am supposed to be and doing the work I am meant to do. Our experienced together was ruled by addiction, betrayal and significant emotional pain. However, through the pain and stuggle, and with the support of family, friends, mentors and coaches, I have connected to the essence of who I am. I am grateful for our journey together, the lessons learned, the path discovered. Thank you, Ward. "Once in while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right." ~Robert Hunter While teaching a two week sexuality unit in health class at a local high school, I attended an anti-bullying assembly put on by Michael Chase from The Kindness Center. The impact on all who attended ... teens and adults ... was astounding! the day following the assembly was declared "Kindness Day" and the energy in the school was electric!
As a result, I was asked to help the school form "The Kindness Crew". The Crew agreed to colloborate with a local agency and declare 2011 A Year of Kindness. Weekly suggested actions will be promoted on the school's TV Morning News Show and published on the Teen Clinic at White Mountain Community Healh's Facebook page. I love the way teens approach life ... totally in the moment and geared up for action! In my adult brain, I was thinking of who I needed to email to make this happen and was shooting for implementation first thing Monday morning. As I was leaving the building, literally 15 minutes after our meeting, I heard the secretary from the main office announcing the Positive Action for This Week, brought to you by the Kindness Crew! The kids certainly didn't waste any time waiting for me :) I hope you will join us in our year of positive action. This will get you started: A Year of Positive Action: Week One Send a thank-you card or letter to someone who has had a positive influence on you. Let them know how much their words and actions have meant in your life.* So after writing my letter to one of my mentors, I'm off to teach a class on the teen brain development, living in the moment and sexual responsibility. Happy Friday! ^reprinted with permission www.positivitynation.com I love working with teens! They inspire me and never cease to amaze me!
I coordinate a community outreach program using teen peer educators in school, clinic and community based settings to help educate kids about growth and development and get them connected to the resources they might need to support healthy decision making around sexuality, relationships, substance use, etc. This week we are launching a 2011: A Year of Positive Action in collaboration with a local middle and high schools and inspired by Positivity Nation and The Kindness Center. As part of the launch, I charged them to come up with a quote that summarizes their feelings about the work we do and how it connects with the Positivity theme . I left them alone for about an hour and here's what they came up with: "Together let's see how many people we can impact, empower, uplift and encourage to reach their fullest potential!" ~Anthony Robbins Brilliant ... and heartwarming! Within a half hour, Deni, our resident teen artist, asked for permission to paint the quote on one of our office doors. Just beautiful! I'll post pictures once they teach me how to download pic files from my cell to my laptop :) I am inspired by their creativity, motivated by their energy, amazed at the pride they take in their work and humbled by their committment to serve others.
